PCB Contamination Exposure in Staten Island, New York
PCB contamination can pretty much occur anywhere but there are places in the past few years where PCB contamination seems to be move prevalent than others. These places include school buildings and warehouses.
In 1977 the United States decided to ban the use of PCB's (Polyclorinated Biphenyls) because of the danger it had on the environment. Prior to this time they were used with transformers, capacitors and conduits. Today PCB's are known to be toxic to both the environment and to humans and animals. In humans and on some studies done on rats PCB's have been linked to causing lung problems including cancer, thryoid problems, attention deficit disorder, reproduction problems, and possibly to other learning disabilities such as autism.
Recently there have been findings of high levels of PCB's in the light fixtures in New York City schools some of which are in Staten Island. Other areas where PCB's can be found are in some warehouses which are still using transformers that contain high levels.
