Who Qualifies for Social Security Disability Insurance?

If you are unable to work due to a disability, you may be eligible for Social Security disability insurance (SSDI). This program is regulated by the Social Security Administration and is supposed to allow disabled individuals to collect income.

Social Security disability insurance is designed to provide income until your condition improves. However, if your condition does not improve, you may be able to continue to receive income.

Who Qualifies for SSDI?
There are certain qualifications that you must meet in order to obtain Social Security disability income. According to the Social Security Administration, you must:

Possess a physical or mental impairment that keeps you from engaging in any substantial gainful activity, and
The medical condition is likely to last at least 12 months or result in death, and
You are under the age of 65, and
You have worked 5 out of the last 10 years

There are some exceptions. For example, you do not need to meet the work criteria if you can prove that you were disabled at or before you turned 22.

You will need to provide medical proof that you are disabled. Some of the considerations in determining whether you are disabled and eligible for compensation include your age, residual functioning capacity, work history, education and your ability to work.

According to the Social Security Administration, it will take between 90 to 120 days to receive an answer in response to your application. However, the process has been known to take several months to complete.
