One of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) methods of speeding up the Social Security disability benefits claim process is to check your conditions against a Listing of Impairments. The listings include distinct categories for different body systems, as well as a differentiation between adult impairments and child impairments.
The Adult Listing of Impairments
When you file your claim for Social Security disability benefits and are over the age of 18, you are considered an adult and therefore subject to verification of your disability through the adult Listing of Impairments. The 14 categories in the Listing of Impairments handle the major body systems and the conditions considered severely disabling.
A person claiming Social Security disability benefits needs to show their disabling condition is listed on the adult Listing of Impairments and it is severe enough to prevent them from performing substantial gainful activity. This condition needs to have lasted at least 12 months or is expected to last more than 12 months or result in death.
The Childhood Listing of Impairments
The childhood Listing of Impairments also has 14 categories qualifying for Social Security disability benefits but are slightly different from those in the adult Listing of Impairments. There is also an additional 15th category, Growth Impairment, which deals with conditions impairing normal growth during the adolescent years.
Most of the childhood Listing of Impairments are identical to the adult listing with some exceptions for conditions affecting children differently than adults. In some cases, the adult listing can be used for children, but not vice-versa. The childhood listings are specifically designed for claimants under the age of 18 and used when a disease progresses differently in adolescence versus adulthood.
The Listing of Impairments and Social Security Disability Benefit Claims
Before you file your Social Security disability benefits claim, check the Listing of Impairments to see if your condition is mentioned. Even if it is not, you can still apply for and obtain benefits with the help of a New York Social Security disability lawyer.
The Listing of Impairments serves mainly as a tool to speed up the claims approval process. Just because a condition is not listed does not mean it cannot be considered as disabling. If your condition does not appear on the Listing of Impairments seek the assistance of a New York Social Security disability lawyer to help you file your claim, as it will require more evidentiary consideration.
