Information for New York Disability Applicants: Immune System Disorders

The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides Social Security disability benefits to individuals who meet the criteria under the SSA's listing of impairments. One of the categories on the list pertains to immune system disorders.

If your medical condition falls under this category and meets the criteria, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. A New York disability lawyer can help determine eligibility and assist you throughout the entire claims process.

Overview of Immune System Disorders

The immune system is complicated with a variety of disorders that can significantly decrease an individual's quality of life. This type of disorder may result in inflammation and infection.

If the immune system disorder is concentrated to one area of the body (an organ or body system), it could lead to a serious loss of function. Limitations can also exist in 2 or more areas of the body, which may lead to a complete loss of function.

Some of the signs and symptoms that may indicate you have a severe immune system disorder are:

  • unexplained and significant weight loss;
  • fever;
  • extreme fatigue;
  • discomfort/ill feeling; and
  • musculoskeletal pain.

The SSA puts immune system disorders into 3 main categories, which include autoimmune disorders, immune deficiency disorders (excluding HIV) and HIV infection.

Category of Impairments for Immune System Disorders

The SSA will evaluate certain impairments to determine whether an individual's medical condition qualifies for Social Security disability benefits.

The category of impairments for immune system disorders includes the following:

  • systemic lupus erythematosus;
  • systemic vasculitis;
  • systemic sclerosis (scleroderma);
  • polymyositis and dermatomyositis;
  • undifferentiated and mixed connective tissue disease;
  • immune deficiency disorders, excluding HIV infection;
  • human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection;
  • inflammatory arthritis; and
  • sjögren's syndrome.

If you suffer from any of these conditions on the listing of impairments and it prevents you from working or functioning on a daily basis, you may be able to receive Social Security disability benefits.
