Defective Products Can Hurt Children

Parents have enough to worry about when it comes to their children, without the extra stress of having to wonder if their children’s toys and products are safe. Over the last few years, there have been countless recalls involving cribs, playpens, children’s clothing, toys, playground equipment and other products. Many of these recalls followed reports of serious injuries and in some cases, death.

One of the most notorious recalls involved the Simplicity crib. This crib was taken off the market after there were reports of two deaths, including a 9-month-old baby and a 6-month-old baby. There were also reports of several infant entrapments in this drop-side crib. More than 1 million cribs were recalled.

Recalls of children’s products have been prompted for various reasons, ranging from harmful levels of lead found in toys to design flaws that caused cribs to be deadly for young infants. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regulates consumer products, but this agency has not been able to keep dangerous children’s products off the market. Manufacturers and distributors are constantly offering toys and other products to the public that turn out to be dangerous.

Manufacturers can and should be held accountable when they place families in danger by producing goods that are defective and therefore unsafe.
