Overview of Compassionate Allowances

The standard waiting time for Social Security disability benefits varies depending on the region, but in general, most applicants can expect a long wait. This is particularly true if you decide to "go it alone" and your claim is denied, sending you into the lengthy appeals process.

This can be discouraging for many people who suffer from disabilities, especially if their condition is such that time is of the essence, such as in cases of a diagnosis of terminal cancer or a fast-moving chronic disease.

Because of these considerations, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created a program that expedites the claims process for individuals suffering from a disease or medical condition that is undoubtedly considered a disability by the SSA.

The Compassionate Allowances list includes rare diseases and other serious medical conditions that the SSA can quickly identify as qualifying for Social Security disability benefits
. If you suffer from a condition on the SSA's Compassionate Allowances list, you should be able to receive your benefits after a minimum wait so that you can quickly address your most pressing financial needs.

What is included on the Compassionate Allowances list?

When
the Compassionate Allowances list was first created, it included 50 medical conditions and ailments, such as:

  • Bladder, bone and breast cancers with distant metastases;
  • Liver cancer;
  • Krabbe Disease;
  • Peritoneal Mesothelioma;
  • Thyroid cancer; and
  • Acute leukemia.

Over time, the SSA has expanded the list for Compassionate Allowances. This was a result of public hearings and the input of medical professionals and non-profit health groups. On March 1, 2010, the SSA added 38 new conditions to the Compassionate Allowances list. Among those include:

  • Batten Disease;
  • Early-onset Alzheimer's Disease;
  • Mixed dementia;
  • Leigh's Disease;
  • Primary Progressive Aphasia; and
  • Wolman Disease.

The conditions included on the SSA's list for Compassionate Allowances are serious-often fatal-cancers and exceptionally rare and severe diseases, though some conditions, such as early-onset Alzheimer's Disease, may be on the rise in the United States.
