Traumatic Brain Injury: Closed Head Injury from an Accident in New York

A closed head injury is a form of a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in which there is no penetration to the skull. Closed head injuries commonly occur in car accidents, falls, sport related accidents, work related accidents and assault.

When a closed head injury occurs there is focal damage (damage is isolated to one area) and diffuse damage to axons (damage to cells spreads to different areas throughout the brain. The effects of a closed head injury tend to be broad.

Closed head injury symptoms usually occur immediately but in cases of mild traumatic brain injury involving a closed head injury the symptoms may appear anywhere from days to weeks after the initial accident occurred. Symptoms of a closed head injury include:
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Dilated pupils
  • Respiratory issues
  • Convulsions
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Cerebrospinal fluid leaking from ears or nose
  • Speech or language problems
  • Vision issues
  • Behavioral or attitude change or problem

Diagnosing a closed head injury should be done by a qualified physician. After involvement in any type of accident where a brain injury is suspected you should be seen immediately by a hospital or other health care provider for a head injury. The hospital will be able to determine the presence of a closed head injury by MRI.

Life after a closed head injury depends on the extent of the damage done to the injury victim. Recovery depends on individual circumstances such as amount of time spent unconscious, amount of time spent in a coma, and how much normal recovery is made within a month. The effects of a closed head injury can last from a few weeks to years or in some circumstances a life time.
