What is a Limited Liability Company?

A: A limited liability company (also known as an "LLC") is a "legal entity" established for the purpose of owning and operating a business.  Compared to other forms of corporate ownership, such as "corporations", "partnerships" and "sole proprietorships", LLC's offer the limited liability protection of a corporation and the pass-through tax advantages of certain partnerships.  Owners of an LLC are called "members" and the agreement governing the LLC's management is called an "operating agreement".
