Many parents often put the needs of their children above their own but when it comes to certain things like car safety your needs are equally important as your children's needs - in fact one actually directly effects the other. Keeping your child in the proper safety seat and, when they are of age, making sure they have their seat belt on properly is very important but do not forget about yourself.
When reading an
article on SILive.com I was reminded of how equally important it is to stress adult seat belt enforcement as it is to stress proper seat belt enforcement and the proper use of a child restraint system. The story on SILive is about a Staten Island driver who was driving his children and was involved in a car accident. While the children suffered injuries the injuries were not traumatic and were minimal compared to what they could have been had they not been properly restrained but the father (the driver) did not have his seat belt on and was partially ejected from his vehicle. Ultimately the driver suffered severe brain damage and was not able to recover. Let this be a reminder that it is just as important for adults to be properly restrained as it is for children.
Remember car accidents are the leading cause of deaths every year among ages 3 to 34 so please make sure you buckle up. While this may not prevent injuries completely it will lessen your chances of severe and possibly even fatal car accident injuries.
