Weight Loss Drug Alli Being Investigated for Possibly Causing Liver Damage Injuries

The FDA is investigating the weight loss drug orlistat, more commonly known as the over the counter weight loss drug Alli, which is made by GlaxoSmithKline.   Also, Roche Laboratories market the drug in a prescription strength version called Xenical.

The FDA has received 32 complaints of consumers who used one of the forms of orlistat having severe liver problems.  Six of the 32 had liver failure and 27 required hospitalization.

The spokeswoman for GlaxoSmithKline, Deborah G. Bolding, denied the possibility that Alli could possibly cause liver problems or liver failure saying that the drug is minimally absorbed in the blood by the weight loss drug.

The FDA does not have enough evidence at this point to ban the drugs Alli or Xenical and has not told consumers to stop use of the product.  They have just merely warned consumers of the possible risk of liver problems.  The FDA will continue to research and test the drug to see if the liver failure and liver problems were indeed associated with Alli and Xenical.

If you experience any liver problems or symptoms such as jaundice while you are taking Alli or Xenical you should contact your doctor immediately and alert them of the symptoms you are experiencing that may be caused by the drug.
