The
Wall Street Journal recently reported that injuries caused by the antibiotic Levaquin (also known as
Levoflaxacin) are creating lawsuits in New Jersey, New York and across the country.
The first cases of the injuries caused by Levaquin have been filed with the New Jersey state court against the makers of the drug,
Johnson & Johnson and
Ortho-McNeil.
In 2008 the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) showed that there were 262 cases of tendon rupture, 259 cases of tendonitis and 274 cases of other tendon disorders associated with Levaquin. Due to the massive amount of injuries reported from Levaquin the FDA ordered that Levaquin and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics be required to include a black box warning stating the dangers associated with Levaquin.
Johnson & Johnson and Ortho-McNeil continued to market Levaquin as a safe antibiotic even though though the FDA showed links between the Levaquin and tendon injuries.
Common tendon injuries caused by Levaquin are to the Achilles tendon, rotator cuff (shoulder), hand, biceps and thumb.
