Toyota Escaped Major Recall for Unintended Acceleration Years Ago According to Investigation

According to a recent ongoing investigation Toyota knew about unintended acceleration issues from at least as far back as 2007.

Investigations show that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration knew of accelerator issues due to multiple complaints that they received and they warned Toyota of the issues they were receiving from consumers.  According to emails recovered during the investigation Toyota attempted to down-play the problem and ran from their responsibilities by convincing the NHTSA that if the floor mats were installed properly by the consumer a problem would not occur and only after pressure from the NHTSA did Toyota agree to a recall but only for one type of floor mats.

According to internal emails recovered during the investigation higher ups in Toyota sent the lower end employees to a meeting with the NHTSA so that nothing would be able to be done as far as a massive recall goes and to delay the process of they losing a lot of money due to the recall.

Some are also questions why the NHTSA would let Toyota only recall one type of floor mat if the problem can possibly with any floor mat.  The NHTSA says they simply did not think the problem was as big as it has become when they were originally made aware of the problem back in 2007.

Since then as most of you know Toyota has been forced to recall over 1 million vehicles some of which were effected by the unintended acceleration problem that Toyota negligently tried to avoid or at least delay.
