Toyota Motor Corp. has advised all of its U.S. dealerships to inspect how the floor mats are placed in vehicles. Toyota said they are asking all of their Lexus and Toyota dealerships to inspect new, used and rental vehicles and are encouraging car owners, mechanics shops, automobile dealers, car washes and anyone else who comes in contact with Lexus or Toyota vehicles to make sure the mats are in the proper area.
The floor mat inspection was sparked by Toyota after a recent accident occured that may possibly be linked to a Lexus floor mat jamming the accelerator. The fatal accident occured on August 28, 2009 and involved Officer Mark Saylor and three of his family members who had rented a 2009 ES 350 Lexus sedan.
In 2007 Toyota Motor Corp. recalled 55,000 Toyota Camry's and Lexus ES 350's due to improperly installed floor mats. The danger the floor mats created was that the mat could slip forward and snag the gas pedal creating uncontrollable accelaration.
If you own a Toyota or Lexus please inspect your car floor mats to make sure they are properly installed and are in the correct place.
