Some residents in Staten Island are concerned about an Asbestos Abatement Project that started in the middle of August. The project is taking place at 1050 Targee Street and is expected to last till around October of this year.
Although the Asbestos Abatement Project was deemed as safe by the Department of Environmental Protection residents in Staten Island are still worried that the asbestos removal can possibly result in some of the asbestos particles becoming airborne and possibly causing harm to residents that live near or commute in this particular area in Staten Island.
The project is being conducted by the city's School Construction Authority to build an overflow for the students at PS 48.
While Staten Island residents are being told the project is safe they hope that if anything changes as far as the safety of the project that they will be notified. Possible problems that can arise if asbestos travels though the air include the risk of mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer which do not usually appear until years after the exposure to asbestos has occurred.
