In May people across the country slowly starting having salmonella poisoning and over the past few months since then the cases of salmonella poisoning have been growing nationwide.
Salmonella poisoning is gastroenteristis caused by food contaminated with bacteria, specifically salmonella bacteria, which multiply freely in the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms of salmonella poisoning may include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Nausea
- Vomitting
- Diarrhea
- Abdominal Pain
Mild cases of salmonella poisoning may last two or three days and do not normally require antibiotics but severe salmonella poisoning can last seven days and usually require antibiotics to get rid of the salmonella poisoning.
While under normal circumstances salmonella poisoning can usually be avoided by properly handling food and cooking food such as eggs, meats and milk products thoroughly recently a less avoidable of a salmonella poisoning outbreak has taken place. The cause for this episode of salmonella poisoning is still being investigated but some believe that the cause of the contaminated eggs, or at least some of them, is coming from one major egg production company owned by Jack DeCoster.
Jack DeCoster is not new to cleanliness issues in the workplace along with a long running list of other lawsuits including sexual harassment, hiring illegal immigrants and animal cruelity charges. Jack DeCoster is currently being investigated to find out if rat or other rodent feces were in the chicken feed from the chickens producing the eggs sold nationwide for consumption by customers.
Since the outbreak of the salmonella poisoning caused by eggs in May over 2,000 people have been reported ill because of eating contaminated eggs. Which has now resulted in a recall of over 380 million eggs.
So which eggs are involved in the recall and how do you know if your eggs are part of the recall? Not all eggs are being recalled but most are. The eggs being recalled were sold by the following companies:
- lbertsons
- Farm Fresh
- James Farms
- Glenview
- Mountain Dairy
- Ralphs
- Boomsma
- Lund
- Kemps
- Pacific Coast
- Lucerne
- Sunshine
- Hillandale
- Trafficanda
- Shoreland
- Dutch Farms
Eggs are packed in varying sizes of cartons (6-egg cartons, dozen egg cartons, 18-egg cartons, and loose eggs for institutional use and repackaging) with Julian dates, a three-digit number ranging from 136 to 229, and plant numbers 1026, 1413, 1720 1942 and 1946. If you have any of these eggs do not consume them.
If you believe you have salmonella poisoning it is important that you either contact your doctor or visit the hospital.
