Recently Frank J. Dito Jr., Staten Island medical malpractice lawyer, on his
blog wrote about Staten Island hospitals and how they are both "University Hospitals" meaning that they are teaching hospitals. A teaching hospital means that students from universities go there to learn hands on experience. When college lets out for the summer these resident doctors or student doctors go to the hospital to get some experience when on their summer break from college. These student doctors are still learning and some of them have had limited experience in the hospital and this is now "their time to shine" and show that they know what they are talking about by putting what they learned in text books and the lab into practice. While some student doctors will do just fine there is a chance that others may not.
Doctor errors or
medical malpractice can cause complications, long lasting affects on your health and can also cause sudden, unforeseen death. It is important, especially in Staten Island hosptials or "university hospitals", to make sure that you or a friend or relative keep a close eye on what the doctors and nurses are doing. If you feel uncomfortable with anything ask questions and if you still feel uncomfortable ask to speak to a higher up doctor.
Things to watch out for in the emergency room this summer and throughout the year are:
- A doctor or nurse administering the wrong medicine;
- A doctor or nurse administering the wrong dose of medicine;
- Treatment of the wrong body part (i.e. treatment of the left leg if it is the right leg that was in pain, etc.);
- Explanations that seem to not make sense or that do not add up; or
- Anything else you may not feel confident or comfortable with.
