Staten Island will be installing 75 new countdown timers into crosswalks around the city. The new countdown timers are part of a $4 billion project to install 1,500 timers into crosswalks around the city by next year.
A few countdown timers were installed at various locations on Hylan Boulevard and seem to be working well.
The timer help the Staten Island pedestrians crossing the street understand how many seconds they have left until the light turns red for them and is about to turn green for the oncoming traffic. Allowing the pedestrians chances of being caught in the middle of the street when the green light appears for the traffic to be reduced.
The 75 locations that the countdown timers will be installed at will be based on width and length of the street along with accident rates. Larger streets and streets prone to accidents in Staten Island will be chosed first to have the countdown timers installed.
