Staten Island Ferry Crash: Some Additional Information

As we reported earlier this month there was a Staten Island ferry crash on the 2700 ton John J. Marchi.  

During this accident the ferry crashed into the terminals lower bridge platform and the upper pedestrian walkway. 

There was damage done to the boat and 15 of the people who were aboard the John J. Marchi were injured.  The injured people included an on duty police officer, an off duty police officer, three crewmembers and ten passengers.   Among the many injuries reported was a dislocated elbow.  

The reported cause of the crash is the failure of the propulsion system as the ferry was attempting to dock, but a full investigation is still being conducted.  All workers aboard the ferry were given a mandatory drug and alcohol test, which reportedly showed that all workers passed, unlike the instance of the Andrew J. Barberi ferry crash in October 2003.  

This is not the first time the John J. Marchi has had problems with docking though.  The same Staten Island Ferry had problems docking before this the worst of which was in April 2007 which resulted in seven people being injured.  This is definitely an issue that needs to be addressed and corrected as soon as possible to prevent this type of incident from occurring again.
