Staten Island Child Injury Alert: Target Recalls Trunks After Was Injured

Target has announced that they have recalled 350,000 woven storage trunks after an 18 month old baby suffered brain damage due to one of these trunks. The lid of the trunk suddenly closed on the child and trapped her between the lid and the rim of the storage trunk.  The child's throat was trapped and being pushed on causing her to not be able to breath.  The child suffered brain damage as a result of a lack of oxygen. There have also been two other reported children injured from the storage trunk.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging parents who own this trunk to stop use immediately and take the item back to the store for a refund.

The problem with the defective and dangerous Target storage trunks being recalled is with the way the hinges were made.  The storage trunks were not required to meet mandatory federal regulations for hinges on toy chests because this product was not designed as a toy or for children.  Children do tend to play with chests and storage trunks and a child of the age as the baby described above does not know that the woven storage trunk could be dangerous which is why thses trunks are now being recalled in light of the recent injuries.

The products affected by this recall were sold in Target stores and online exclusively between February 2009 and April 2010 and cost between $50 and $130.

What Should I Do If I Own A Recalled Product Like the One Above?

If you have a recalled p
roduct in your house - especially if you have children - you should follow the procedures listed to follow for the specific product that is being recalled.  Normally the recall will require you to:

(a) Contact the company for a full refund or replacement item

(b) Contact the company for a free repair kit

(c) Contact the store you purchased the item at  - sometimes this is the case if the product being recalled was recalled by the store and not the manufacturer of the defective product.  This situation occurs most commonly when the business who manufactured the product is either out of business or if the company at fault does not want to take responsibility for a recall of one of their products.

What Should I Do My Child Was Injured by a Recalled Product

If your child has been injured by a recalled product it is important that you speak with a product liability attorney regarding your child's injury case.  You very well may have a case against the manufactuer of the company for your child's injuries.  Injuries can often be life threatening or have a life long impact on a child and also ultimately on you - the child's parents.  Compensation for your child's injuries is important in providing him/her with the proper medical care and also will allow you to have the money you need to accommodate your child.  If the injury that your child sustained from the defective product affects  your child in a way that they will need special treatment and will not be able to function properly your child deserves to be compensated for that also.

If your child was injured by a defective product and you live in Staten Island, New York contact Frank J.
