Staten Island Child Injury Alert: Dangers of Hot Tubs and Young Children

Many parents wonder if hot tubs are safe for children.  Just like in a swimming pool children in hot tubs should be supervised so that accidents do not happen.  As with pool accidents, hot tub accidents can result in death just as easily.

Today it was announced in the news that a famous NFL player, Randall Cunningham, lost his 2 year old son to a hot tub accident.  According to reports Cunninham was out of town but an adult in the house who was watching the toddler and other children in the house discovered the toddler, Christian Cunningham, in the hot tub and tried to preform CPR on him and he was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead an hour after arriving.

Studies show that more than 830 children a year under the age of 14 die in a hot tub accident. This study does not even include children that survive hot tub accidents but go on to suffer brain damage because of the lack of air while they were drowning.

Hot tubs can be very dangerous and it is important this summer and at all times to make sure you keep your hot tub secure. Just like with swimming pools you should make sure that children do not have easy access to your swimming pool whether you yourself have children or if your neighbors around you have children.  Children are often curious and sometimes will wonder into yards and, if they are young children, may not know better about going into a pool or hot tub alone.  Remember you as a homeowner, pool owner and/or hot tub owner are responsible for making sure your pool and/or hot tub are not easily accessable by children. You can do this by making sure you have a high gate or fence and making sure to keep it locked at all times.  Remember if a child drowns due to your negligence you may be liable for their injuries or death.

If your child was injured or died in a hot tub or was injured or died in a swimming pool and it was because of the negligence of the owner of the pool it is important you contact an injury lawyer to discuss the hot tub accident or swimming pool accident with.  Nothing can erase the death of a child and if you have lost your child our heart goes out to you.  Starting a lawsuit against the negligent party will help you with things such as funeral expenses, medical bills and any other charges and costs you may have incurred.
