Sram Recalls Bicycle Chains Due to Connectors That Can Crack and Cause Injury

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of 24,000 Sram 10-Speed Bicycle Chains with PowerLock connector links.  The bicycle chains are being recalled because the connector links are brittle and weak and can crack and cause the bicycle chain to separate from the bicycle and can result in the rider falling from the bike causing possible injuries.

So far four incidents of the bicycle chain connectors failing have been reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission but so far there have been no known injuries.  To report an injury from this product to the CPSC click here.

Individual PowerLock connector links were sold between January and August 2009 and can be identified by a date coder of M or N on the side of the connector link.  Bicycles with the effected chains were sold between April and August 2009 and have connector links with chain models numbers of any of the following numbers: PC-1030, PC-1050, PC-1070, PC-1090 and PC-1090R.

The product was manufactured in Portugal and were sold nationwide in the United States.
The cost of the PowerLink connectors were sold separately for approximately $5 and were also sold as part of a 10-speed chain for $35 - $85.

If you think you may own this product check the model number on the side of the connector link or check your chain model number.  If you do have this recalled product the CPSC is urging that you stop use immediately to avoid injury and call Sram at 800.346.2928 or visit their website at http://www.sram.com/ and request that a replacement part be sent out to you.

If you were injured due to a defective bicycle chain or any defective or malfunctioning bicycle part contact a Staten Island & Brooklyn Injury Lawyer.  Frank J.
