School bullying and cyber bullying both happen in todays day and age and both present a very realistic concern for the child being bullied. While some children and teens know how to deal with bullying some may find themselves depressed and possibly even suicidal because of bullying. Here are some signs to look out for that may point to that a child is being bullied:
Coming home with torn, missing or damaged pieces of clothing, books or other belongings;
Unexplained cuts, bruises or scratches;
Has few friends with which he/she spends time with;
Seems afraid of going to school, walking to school or riding on the bus;
Takes a long and not practical route to school;
Has lost interest in school or suddenly starts doing poorly in school;
Appears to be mad, sad, moody or depressed when he/she comes home from school;
Complains of frequent problems that seem to disappear during non-school hours such as a stomachache, headache or other physical problem;
Has trouble sleeping or has bad dreams;
Experiences loss of appetite; and/or
Appears anxious or has low self esteem.
If you know a child or if your own child is suffering from these signs it may mean that they are being bullied either at school or that they may be a victim of social media bullying but does not necessarily mean that they are. A parent or teacher thinking that a child or teen is being bullied should talk to the child or teen you should include both direct and subtle questions when speaking to the child. Direct questions can include asking the child directly if they are being bullied and letting them know you are concerned about their behavior while more subtle questions should include asking them about other kids they may have met at school and who they eat lunch with. If your child is being bullied it is important to speak with the staff at the school to determine what will be done about the situation.
