Shoulder Dislocation Birth Injury Can Now Be Detected by Ultrasound

The January issue of Radiology revealed that ultrasounds can now be used to detect posterior shoulder dislocations in infants 3 to 6 months of age with permanent brachial plexus injuries.

The study used during this research found that by using ultrasonography that permanent brachial plexus injuries can be examined.  The study was done with 132 infants that were examined by ultrasonography multiple times in a 12 month period.  The study also found that in one-third of 27 patients with permanent brachial plexus injuries that failed to heal in the first year that posterior subluxation of the humeral head developed.  Posterior subluxation was detected by ultrasound in 55% of the patients at 3 months of age and in 89% of patients at 6 months of age.

Using ultrasound technology to help in examining and detecting conditions due to permanent brachial plexus injury shows promising results.  This can be a useful tool sometime in the near future in helping parents detect conditions such as posterior subluxation in infants and young children.
