According to
reports the results for the tests for PCB's in PS 53 in Staten Island are in. The tests run by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show that high levels of PCB's are present in certain classrooms in PS 53. Some classrooms tested showed PCB amounts at being as low as seven parts per million to as high as 260,000 parts per million in some classrooms. The federal govenments "acceptable" limit is 50 parts per million so needless to say there are some classrooms in PS 53 in Staten Island that are far over the allowable PCB limit.
The EPA also claims that they believe over 800 light fixtures throughout schools in New York City may also unhealthy levels of PCB's present. The EPA wants the suspect light fixtures removed and replaced but city officials so far do not seem very willing to move forward with the replacement claiming the process to replace 800 light fixtures will cost well over $1 million.
