A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be devastating at any age but can be especially devastating for children and young adults.
According to an article by
CBS New York a 23 year old graduate of Penn State University suffered a traumatic brain injury 7 years ago as a teenager when he was hit by a van in New Jersey. The brain injury that Matthew Peltz suffered as a teenager was severe and he went from being a star athlete to having to re-learn how to walk, talk, eat and perform simple tasks. He even had to learn tasks that seemed less obvious to others from the outside looking in such as patience and controlling impulses.
Matthew Peltz has and
continues to overcome the traumatic brain injury that he suffered as a teen and hopes to help others in similar situations as him. He is currently a rehabilitation counselor and helps children and young adults who suffer from traumatic brain injuries and although everyone has a different story as to how their brain injury happened he feels as if he sees a little bit of what he had to go through in everyone he helps.
It was once thought that wherever a patient was at one year after recovering from a traumatic brain injury is where the progress stopped but recent studies have shown that the brain actually continues to repair itself for the rest of your life and also tries to do things to compensate for the area of the brain that was injured.
