Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and the Zadroga Bill: Coverage of Mental Health Issues from 9/11

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most common mental health issues that presents itself after an accident occurs or a traumatic and devistating experience. Many people who survived the attack on the World Trade Center and also first responders and the clean-up crew at the World Trade Center have been evaluated off and on over the years since 9/11 happened and show signs of PTSD.

PTSD can range from moderate to severe. Severe PTSD can be immobilizing for many who suffer from it because it causes them to constantly relive the experience that caused the problem. With 9/11 being such a traumatic experience for some people many of them ended up with severe PTSD. Over the years the numbers effected by severe PTSD have decreased but there are many who still experience moderate to severe PTSD. For those who deal with PTSD it can cause their whole life to be effected.

It is important if you are experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder that you consult your doctor so you can receive the proper treatments. Common signs of post-traumatic stress disorder are:
  • Flashbacks
  • Upsetting dreams about the traumatic event
  • Trying to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Feeling emotionally numb
  • Avoiding activities you enjoy
  • Difficulty maintaining close relationships with people
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Irritability
  • Guilt
  • Shame
  • Anger
  • Self-destructive behavior
  • Hearing or seeing things that aren't really there
  • Being scared or startled easily

First responders to the World Trade Center on 9/11 and the clean-up crew are eligible for a special compensation that is being made available this July. The compensation is being made available to rescuers and clean-up crews who are still suffering from physical and (some) mental issues directly caused by the events of 9/11. The money being made available throught the Zadroga Bill is not something that is being given away automatically rather something that you must apply for and present a case as to why you need the compensation. A New York Zadroga lawyer can help you with obtaining this compensation.
