A couple of weeks ago the
Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that they would be announcing a warning statement about the
dangers associated with baby slings. The reason for them releasing a warning statement about baby slings was because of three recent infant deaths associated with baby slings. The three recent deaths have been directly associated with Infantano baby slings which brought about the
baby sling recall which consists of 1 million Infantano "Sling Rider" and "Wendy Bellissimo" slings in the U.S. and 15,000 in Canada.
Currently there are no federal rules for baby slings so Infantano, the CPSC, and ASTM International, an organization that sets voluntary safety standards, are currently working on creating federal rules and safety standards that should be followed for baby slings.
Currently there are two ways that investigators have determined that infants are at risk for suffocation and ultimately death:
- The slings fabric can push against a baby's nose or mouth, blocking the baby's breathing and suffocating a baby within a minute or two.
- In infant slings where it holds the baby in a "C-shape" where the baby rests under the mothers chest or across the stomach region a baby who does not have control of their head or neck fully yet may be at risk for suffocating due to their head flopping forward, chin-to-chest, which restricts the baby's ability to breath. If this occurs the baby may slowly suffocate.
If you own the Sling Rider or Wendy Bellissimo by Infantano you are being urged to contact Infantano at 1.866.860.1361 to avoid injury or the death of your child. Infantano will send a replacement product to you to replace the recalled baby sling.
