Image of potentially hazardous crib by SimplicityStaten Island and New York news reporters and newspapers are reporting a massive crib recall for Simplicity drop side cribs. The 400,000 crib recall was issued by the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because the crib poses the risk of entrapment and strangulation to infants.
The recall was issued just days after the death of an 8 month old child from Houston, TX suffocated after being trapped between the cribs parts.
Entrapment, strangulation and/or suffocation by the Simplicity crib can occur because the plastic hardwear can break or deform causing the dropside of the crib to detach and create a space between the crib's wooden drop down rail and the mattress.
The defective cribs were sold between January 2005 and June 2009 and were usually sold for $150 - $300.
The model numbers being recalled include but are not limited to the following numbers: 8050, 8325, 8620, 8745, 8748, 8755, 8756, 8765, 8778, 8810, 8994, 8995 and 8996.
The manufacturer of these cribs, Simpilicity, does not currently appear to be running day to day operations anymore.
If you own a Simplicity crib with any of the model numbers listed above or if your crib has this dangerous defect return it to the store where you purchased it immediately for a refund or a replacement crib.
