New York City Pedestrian Accidents Can Cause Serious Injuries

A recent study showed that one out of every three people killed in traffic accidents are pedestrians.  New York City is full of pedestrians because most people prefer to take public transportation from one borough to the next as opposed to driving their car in an already crowded city and perhaps this is what makes the statistic so high.

In 2007 to 2008 a different study was done by the Transportation of America which showed that for ever million residents in New York City 33 die while on foot.  While this statistic makes the number of pedestrians who are struck by vehicles that die seem low this study did not take into consideration how many pedestrians are injured while walking, running or bicycling.

A study done in 2005 may put pedestrian injuries into prospective a little bit more.  In 2005 there were 71,167 motor vehicle accidents in New York City of which 10,880 involved pedestrians.  Out of the 10,880 pedestrians that were struck by a vehicle 159 pedestrian deaths occured.  That leaves over 10,500 that were still involved in the accidents and more than likely the majority of those pedestrians were injured.

Being involved in a motor vehicle accident if you are a pedestrian can be fatal or could leave you with long lasting disabilities that can completely alter your life.  If you are a pedestrian who was hit by a car while walking you will want to contact an expert New York City Injury Lawyer regarding your accident and injuries sustained while walking.  Frank J. Dito expert Staten Island injury lawyer will be able to sit down with you for no cost and no obligation and review your potential accident case with you.  He will be able to help you determine whether or not you are able to be compenstated for the injuries you sustained based on the situation which occured when the vehicle hit you. Here are some common situations in which pedestrians are injured and the driver will more than likely be held at fault for the accident:

  • Driver runs a red light and hits the pedestrian
  • There are no signals or traffic signals are not functioning properly and the pedestrian is hit by a vehicle
  • The driver is drunk and hits a pedestrian
  • The driver loses control of the vehicle and hits a pedestrian while they are still on the sidewalk

To strengthen your case if you were hit by a car you will want to make sure you keep track of all witnesses, police reports and medical records.
