A new law for bicycle riders was passed in New York a few weeks ago. The law has been labeled Merrill's law in honor of Merrill Cassel, a 66 year old New York bicyclist, who was killed last November after a public bus sideswiped him while he was riding his bicycle.
The New York bicycle law will go into effect in November of this year and requires that drivers in New York keep a safe distance when passing bicycle riders. Drivers must keep a safe distance to the left when passing a bicyclist on the same side of the roadway until the driver has clearly passed the bike rider and is a safe distance away from the bicycle.
It is important for a law like this to be in effect, especially for New York City bicyclists. If you were hit by a bus or car while riding a bicycle it is important to speak with an attorney to find out your legal rights for starting a lawsuit in New York.
