Dr. Michael Snedden, a surgeon in Fredricksburg, Virginia, is facing two seperate
lawsuits for surgery procedures that went wrong.
The first lawsuit that is against the surgeon for
medical malpractice is a situation where a Virigina woman, Lexie Fincher, went in to have a procedure done which was to consist of removing a lipoma, a benign tumor composed of fatty tissue, from the back of her right shoulder. The day Ms. Fincher was scheduled for her surgery to have the lipoma removed Dr. Snedden allegedly made a series of mistakes including reading an MRI wrong and operating on the woman without remembering where the lipoma was. Instead of awaking Ms. Fincher from the anesthesia he instead decided to search around the general area where the lipoma was except he opened her from the front of her right shoulder instead of where the lipoma was, which was on the back of her right shoulder. During the procedure Dr. Snedden allegedly split a muscle that did not need to be split and undermined tissue that did not need to be undermined.
When Ms. Fincher realized that the lipoma was still there and was not removed she and her husband confronted the surgeon about it. It took Ms. Fincher months of rehab for her shoulder to get it back to normal and then had to have a seperate surgery to have the lipoma removed correctly.
Ms. Fincher's attorney,
Benjamin Glass, a Fairfax, VA injury lawyer, says that her case is not catastrophic but what Ms. Fincher is looking for is to make a point that when you make a mistake you have to take responsibility especially when you are in a position such as Dr. Snedden.
The second lawsuit that is against Dr. Snedden involved another woman from Virginia, Tamara Henry, in which the lawsuit alleges that Ms. Henry was told by Dr. Snedden that she had a bursa, which is a liquid filled cavity near the knee cap. Dr. Snedden recommended removing the bursa but when he performed the surgery he mistakenly cut the patellar tendon and it has now taken seven additional knee surgeries to attempt to repair the damages that were allegedly done by Dr. Snedden. Ms. Henry now wears a knee brace and has not fully recovered from the mistake the surgeon allegedly made.
