Injury Causing Repairs in Staten Island Buildings Need to Be Addressed by Landlords and City

Injuries caused from not properly repairing apartment buildings seem to be happening more often these days in Staten Island, Brooklyn and other areas of New York City. Apartment accidents happen far too often and most of the time can be prevented by the landlord if he/she would have made the proper repairs to the apartment building. When proper repairs are not made in a timely fashion to an apartment building the landlord is putting the tenants and anyone else who steps in or near the building at risk of an injury.

A broken step, railing or window, a faulty heating system, or an electrical problem can quickly become dangerous and sometimes even deadly. It is up to a landlord to make sure that all repairs are done quickly and correctly to avoid injuries to the people who are in the building. Avoiding repairs in an apartment building often results in serious injuries to those affected by it.

Three (3) years ago New York City put the Alternative Enforcement Program (AEP) into place. The purpose of the AEP is to issue violations to landlords who need to make repairs to their buildings and if those repairs are not made they make the repairs for them and then issue the landlord a bill which needs to be repaid for the services rendered. Many Staten Island residents and residents of other parts of New York City are concerned that the AEP is not working as well as they would like to see it.

Recently buildings that are in desperate need of repair have been heavily talked about in places such ad in the Staten Island Advance. The recent discussions sparked the housing agency in Staten Island to re-inspect three Richmond Port buildings last week which resulted in 36 new violations being issues. Some violations included exposed wiring, missing locks, leaky pipes and plaster falling from the ceiling.
