The past few months New York City newspapers, news shows, and online writers have been buzzing about a very serious problem dealing with the schools their children attend - high levels of PCB's found in Staten Island's public schools. Now
another PCB issue has surfaced and I am sure will now become the topic of conversation among school aged children's parents in Brooklyn. High levels of PCBs were found in P.S. 11 in Brooklyn after being tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The acceptable federal limit for PCB's is 50 parts per million but the amount found in P.S. 11 exceeded the acceptable amounts.
The PCBs are mainly being found in old florescent light fixtures. The Department of Education says that any leaky fixtures will have PCB's removed and will be replace.
While PCB's do not usually have an immediate effect on people it does pose long term threats such as respiratory problems, problems with future children (for women who become overly exposed to PCB's), and cancer.
