Patients taking osteoporosis drugs are being warned of a potential injury causing side effect of the drugs which include hip fractures and thigh fractures.
The FDA announced last month that osteoporosis drugs such as Actonel, Atelvia, Boniva, Fosamax, Reclast, and generic versions of the medications may increase the risk of hip and thigh fractures and also announced they would be adding a warning label on the osteoporosis medicine.
According to an article on WebMD those taking osteoporosis drugs with bisphosphonates for five years or more are at the most risk of suffering from side effects from Fosamax and similar osteoporosis medications. Warning signs for the fracture may be something as simple as hip pain or thigh pain because the fractures occur with little to no trauma to the thigh or hip.
Patients taking Fosamax or other osteoporosis drugs should visit their doctor immediately if suffering from pain as this may be a sign that further medical treatment is necessary for the hip injury or thigh injury.
