After decades of being around, multiple recalls, over 30 deaths of infants and toddlers, and countless child injuries drop-side cribs have finally been banned by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The decision was a unanimous vote made by the CPSC and will take effect in June 2011.
Drop-side cribs will no longer be allowed to be manufactured, available for sale, or available for re-sale once the effective date takes place.
Most problems from drop-side cribs stemmed from the space that is created between the mattress area and the drop-side area of the crib. The gap creates a danger for infants and young children because they are at risk of suffocation and entrapment.
Children ranging from only a few days old to a couple of years old have suffered from this serious manufacturer defect over the past few decades.
