The FDA recently announced the recall of Darvon and Darvocet due to the recent findings of the effects it has on the heart. The FDA says that the prescription drug which makes up Darvon and Darvocet, propoxyphene, has shown in recent studies to have potentially serious or fatal side effects such as heart rhythm abnormalities.
It has been recommended by the FDA that the product be pulled from the shelves and that doctors stop prescribing and/or giving out any free samples of the medication but has not told patients on the drug to stop taking Darvon, Darvocet or any other medication with propoxyphene in it. Instead it is recommended that patients already using these drugs contact their doctor for further instruction on what to do. Doctors should be able to prescribe an alternative to the drug.
The FDA has also asked other manufacturers of drugs with propoxyphene such as generic forms of Darvon and Darvocet to consider pulling their medications off of the market also.
