On Thursday the TODAY show on
MSNBC interviewed the parents of two children who were almost killed by a car crashing into their house.
Lopez and Camabara were relaxing at home one Sunday afternoon in New Mexico when they heard a loud noise which sounded similar to a bomb going off. The noise came from a car crashing into the side of their house and into their living room and children's bedroom.
Just minutes before the crash had occurred their 21-month old child, Destiny, had woke up from a nap and came in the room with Lopez. Their younger child, Christoper, 8-months old, was in his room napping still.
Lopez immediately ran to the child's room to check on his son. He had a hard time opening the door up but managed to break it open eventually. The crib in the room where his daughter had been lying just minutes before had been completely destroyed from the car plowing into their home. If she would not have woken up from her nap when she did she could have possibly killed by the accident. The next thing Lopez and Camabara saw when they looked in the room was that their 8-month old child was hit by the car. His head and his arms were sticking out from the car and he was wedged between glass and wood. They immediately though he was dead. The couple then dislodged the child and amazingly the child was breathing and appeared to be fine except for some injuries from the car accident such as cuts and scratches from the car glass flying.
Lopez and Camabara noticed at this point that there was a strong smell of gas in the house. The area where the car hit was where the gas tank was. The couple realized that they had to get out of the house as quick as possible in case of an explosion. The couple was able to get the driver of the car, who was unconscious, out of the car and carried him out of the house.
The accident occurred when the driver of the car, 51-year old Carrie Biesiot, fell asleep while driving after taking the sleep aid Ambien. The driver claims that she took the drug 12 hours before driving the vehicle and that while she was driving she blacked out and crashed into the house. Investigations on the car crash are still ongoing.
