The Bronx bus crash that killed 15 and injured many others on a tour bus traveling through New York has triggered a call for higher safety measures for tour buses traveling through New York.
New York started doing
spot checks on tour buses traveling through the state. These tour bus spot checks are being headed by the New York State Police and the New York Department of Transportation. So far 36 bus drivers have went through one of these random spot checks in New York. Of those 36 bus drivers 8 are being put out of service. The tour bus spot checks will continue to occur and will be random as far as date, time, and location go.
This news comes on the same day as an
update to the Bronx bus crash case is made. It was announced today that the driver of the bus that crashed in the Bronx last week is losing his privilages as a bus driver. Apparently he has been using multiples names other than the one he went by as a tour bus driver - Ophadel Williams. Under the other names he has went by it was discovered that he has been in jail multiple times over the years for issues ranging from grand larceny to man slaughter. He also has had multiple suspensions of his license under the other names which he has gone under in the past.
Investigations into the exact cause of the Bronx bus accident are still on going. Some of the survivors from the bus say they felt the bus cross over the rumble strips near the shoulder shortly before the bus tipped over. Other sources such as two UPS trucks that were driving by say the bus appeared to be speeding. No charges have been made against the bus driver at this time.
