Avoiding Employee Injuries on Black Friday | NY Workers' Compensation Lawyer

Black Friday is a very busy time for shoppers every year but probably even more busy for the employees working on Black Friday.

There are many injuries every year associated with Black Friday - some shoppers and some workers - and even deaths that have occurred. In 2008 a Walmart employee working on Black Friday was trampled and died from asphyxiation.

This year the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is working hard to make sure that companies are more aware of the danger to their workers on Black Friday. OSHA has even went as far as sending a safety control fact sheet to a lot of big name stores that get a lot of business on Black Friday such as Walmart, Target, Macy's, JCPenney, Sears, Kohl's, TJX, Costco, Best Buy, BJ's, Toys R US, Dillard's and IKEA.

The safety control fact sheet recommends that stores train security personnel or police officers on-site, erect barricades, or rope lines for pedestrians, control crowds in advance of customer arrival, place the customer line away from the entrance to the store, put emergency plans into place in case of an emergency, and have security personnel or customer service representatives explain store procedures prior to customers entering the store.
