Pedestrian injury is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury in the United States among children. Driver behavior is often to blame for these tragic child injuries and death. A recent study by SAFE KIDS and FedEx Express discovered that nearly half of the vehicles observed committed a stop sign violation in school zones and neighborhoods.
It didn’t matter if pedestrians or children were present. Twenty-four percent of drivers still didn’t completely stop. Researchers also noticed that 37 percent of motorists rolled through stop signs, while 7 percent didn’t even bother to stop.
Another study by SAFE KIDS came to the conclusion that two-thirds of drivers exceeded the posted speed limit in school zones during the 30 minutes before and after school. This type of behavior can have deadly consequences.
Children do not have the same reasoning skills as adults and tend to make quick decisions, such as running into the street to grab a ball or cutting in front of a car when they are riding their bicycle. It is therefore up to the driver to pay close attention to help avoid a tragic New York pedestrian accident.
