A Dangerous Intersection in Staten Island on Hylan Boulevard Claims Another Life: DOT Making Changes to Intersection to Make Hylan Boulevard Safer

The death of an 82-year old woman involved in a fatal car accident on Saturday caused the Department of Transportation ("DOT") in Staten Island to decide to make some quick changes to the Hylan Boulevard intersection that has also been responsible for three other deaths in the past 18 months.

According to the Department of Transportation the City of New York already had plans to change the flow of traffic at the intersection located at Hylan Boulevard and Steuben Street but did not plan to implement the changes until the beginning of the new year. The DOT decided to implement the changes immediately in light of the accident on Saturday. The changes began today with the first changes being made to the signal system. A red arrow light will be installed which will prevent drivers from making a sharp left turn against fast moving traffic. Left turns from the Verrazano bound section on Hylan Boulevard onto Steuben Street will only be allowed to turn when a green arrow is present. Additional changes will also include the two left lanes being dedicated exclusively to left turning vehicles and parking restrictions being enforced to help keep traffic flowing.

Changes that will be enforced after the winter months are over will include a concrete median being placed on Hylan Boulevard across the street from left turn lanes to keep drivers from veering out of the turning lanes into oncoming traffic. For now the median will be marked with bright yellow stripes.
