Late last week there was 11 people killed in a car wreck in Kentucky according to CNN reporters. The crash is said to have been the deadliest crash that has happened in Kentucky in the past 20 years. The car accident occured around 5:30 or 6:00 am and involved a tractor trailor and a van. At this time the only infomation authorities have on how the crash occured is that the tractor trailor crossed the median and hit the van but the exact cause has not been determined yet at this time and investigations are ongoing.
One thing that stands out in particular about this car accident is that there were children involved, a 3 and a 5 year old which survived, but one of the children, a baby who was adopted, was not in a child safety seat (car seat) and died. According to investigators it is thought the child was being held by someone when the crash occured.
It is very important that children ride in a child safety seat every time the are in a vehicle no matter how short of a distance is being traveled or how young or old they are. If a child is under the age of 8 years old they need to be in a child safety seat - whether it be an infant car seat, convertable car seat or a booster seat they need to be in one in the state of New York until they turn 8 years old. Riding in a child safety seat helps babies and even older children to remain safe if a car accident occurs.
Many parents are not sure of the specific break down of what ages and weights children are required to be for different types of child safety seats so here a quick break down:
Infant - an infant should stay in a rear-facing car seat until they are at least 20 lbs. andare at least one year old.
Toddlers / Pre-school age children - a child this age should be in a forward facing convertable car seat or a rear-facing car seat (if the child is either under one year old or under 20 lbs)
School age children - at the age of 4 years old children who have outgrown their forward facing car seats and weigh more than 40 lbs can be put in a booster seat.
Older children (up to the age of 8) - older children need to remain in a booster seat until they are 8 years old and are either 4'9" or weight over 100 lbs at which time they should ride in the back seat with a seat belt on.

Tiny Love of New York, NY and the Maya Group of Huntington Beach, CA have issued a recall for wind chime toys. The company has recalled 625,000 wind chime toys in the U.S. and 156,000 in Canada because of dangerous metal rods that can cause injury to a baby when exposed. These sharp metal rods are not visible when the wind chime toy is fully assembled but after receiving five reports of babies easily pulling the wind chime toy apart the manufacturer decided to recall the wind chime toy to avoid risk of injury to babies who may own them.
The recalled wind chimes were sold multiple ways both seperately and with Gymini Kick and Play Activity Gym and with Tiny Smarts Gift Sets. The baby wind chime toy was sold at Toys R Us, Walmart, Target, Buy Buy Baby and TJ Maxx Stores nationwide from February 2002 till February 2010. You can identify these wind chime toys by the wind chime sound that the toy makes and it comes in a variety of shapes including a fish, duck and bunny.
If you own this product take it away from your baby immediately. Not doing so can result in injuries to your baby from this recalled toy. Parents are being advised to call Tiny Love immediately at 888-791-8161 for further for receiving a free replacement toy for the recalled wind chime toy.
Another crib recall has been issued for a defective drop-side crib. The recall will affect 500,000 cribs and includes cribs that were sold nationwide at popular baby furniture stores such as Buy Buy Baby, K-Mart, Walmart and many other sotres.
The recall for the Generation 2 Worldwide and ChildESIGNS cribs was issued today because of multiple injuries that have been reported along with reports of the death of three young children due to the defective drop-side cribs.
The cribs are being recalled because they can potentially break and allow the drop-side to detach and also because the mattress supports can pull away from the crib frame. Both defects can create gaps in the crib which can lead to strangulation or suffocation of a small child.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received 28 reports of the crib breaking for reasons relating to detached mattress supports and detached drop-sides.
The company that manufactured the cribs, Generation 2 Worldwide, has been out of business since 2007. If you own one of these cribs that were recalled you should contact the store that you purchased the crib refund for instructions on what to do. More than likely you will be issued a full refund, replacement or store credit for the recalled crib. If the store gives you a problem resolving the issue the CPSC has asked that you call them.
If your child was injured by a Generation 2 Worldwide or ChildESIGNS crib you should notify the CPSC by filing a complaint of an incident.
Other dangerous crib recalls that have been issued in the past year include Jardine and Simplicity cribs which were recalled in 2009.
